“Read mommy’s book” - I don’t really like looking at my old work (in fact, I usually avoid it), but it is incredibly rewarding to see my son enjoy this book I worked on with Aart de Geus a few years ago. It’s a good reminder to finally finish up some of the new stories I’ve been working on. I don’t have a publisher for those, but I think I might just print a few copies myself for my boys (and friends) to enjoy.

Not everyone is enjoying the shift to a summer wardrobe. Jacob was adamant this morning he wear long pants instead of shorts, even though it’s hot as 🔥out there. Toddlers 🤷🏼‍♀️

Long, personal post alert // I often hear people talk about having kids and how as soon as you have children you no longer have any time to yourself and it makes it impossible to get anything done. This is true. Whether you’re at home with your child(ren) or at work, parenting is a pretty full on gig and I often mourn the loss of me-time.
For me, having children also changed my way of working for the better. I value my time more, which means if I have a moment to myself, I maximize it. I suck every drop of productivity out of it and often end up with more finished work than I would have previously in the same amount of time.
But the most important and stunning thing to me is that it has forced me to be patient. I’m a terribly impatient person, especially when it comes to creating art. I want things ticked off, finished, done. My teachers in elementary school would always write on my report cards “talented, but works too quickly”. In business, this is often a good thing. Produce a scrappy version, get it out there. Done is better than perfect. And for most of my life I’ve leaned into that truth. It brought me results. But these past years, I’ve learned the power of slowness, the force of sitting with the desire to work, but not having a free hand to do so. I’ve learned to relish having to stretch out the process and leaving space for unexpected insights.
It’s a truth I knew from my yoga practice. Forcing it in yoga might bring you into the pose you want to get in, but it skips over the most important part of the yoga: the process. The practice.
I’ve always said that in essence, having children, in my case, was a selfish choice. The earth doesn’t need more people, but I wanted to be a mother. It was choice I was lucky enough to be able make, and I am well well aware of my privilege here (even phrasing it as a choice makes me cringe a bit). Anyhow, children are their own people, and I now understand I am here for them, they are not here for me. Silly me. But that is what kids do to you. They teach you that you are just a tiny part of the story, and that you both need to savor every bit of it, and also need to just let it happen around you sometimes.
