Tony Schwartz: The Myths of the Overworked Creative

Written by AnnaDenise on Tuesday, June 05, 2012 at 07:30

This fall, I will start working 4 days instead of 5. Yes, I have been working full time these past three years, whilst also trying to set up my own illustration company. In fact, I've been working more than full time, as I work for a cultural institution and we often have evening events. About two times a week, I get home around midnight. Which is fine. I just don't get a lot of sleep. Or time to think. Or see friends and family. Or time to sort of be where I am at and come up with a coherent plan or idea of where I want to be. And that kind of needs to change. Now. I know I am probably being a tad too optimistic thinking this one day a week will completely transform my life, but it's a (very small) step towards healthier 'energy management'. Been watching this video of energy expert Tony Schwartz I found on 99% (Behance) over and over again.

"You can actively cultivate the emotions that serve you best just as systematically as you can build a bicep or a tricep."

Sounds awesome.

What a good outlook. Such a big step but such a good one as well. So few people take the time they need to achieve their dreams, but you are doing that. How inspiring! Keep up the good work.

Good luck with your decision! I’m thinking about starting to work 4days instead of 5 as well, for the same reasons. Life is too short to work all the time and never be able to the things you find important.
